The Asian American Alliance of San Antonio (AAASA), founded by a Chinese- American former San Antonio City Councilwoman Ms. Elisa Chan, brought civic engagement to the forefront this week as it hosted a non‑partisan Candidates Forum at the Alamo Colleges District Access Building.
The event gathered Democratic, Republican, and Independent candidates running for various Bexar County and Texas House District offices, offering voters a rare opportunity to hear directly from those seeking to represent them.
Held on September 23, 2026, the forum emphasized open dialogue, transparency, and community participation. AAASA, known for its advocacy on behalf of Asian American communities across San Antonio, organized the event to encourage informed voting and strengthen connections between elected officials and the city’s diverse population.
The evening was moderated by Dr. Willie Ng, who guided the discussion with professionalism and balance. Candidates were invited to share their priorities, legislative goals, and perspectives on issues affecting local residents. The forum’s non‑partisan format ensured that all voices were heard equally, creating a space focused on information rather than political persuasion.
Attendees included community leaders, educators, students, business owners, and families from across San Antonio. Many expressed appreciation for AAASA’s commitment to civic education and its efforts to elevate Asian American representation in public discourse.
For some, it was their first time attending a candidate forum; for others, it was an important continuation of their long‑standing involvement in local government.
Throughout the evening, candidates addressed topics such as public safety, education, economic development, small business support, and community health.
While viewpoints varied, the shared goal of serving Bexar County residents remained central. The forum’s respectful tone underscored the importance of civil dialogue—especially during an election season.
AAASA leaders highlighted that events like this are essential for strengthening democratic participation. By providing a platform where voters can engage directly with candidates, the organization hopes to empower residents to make informed decisions at the ballot box.
The forum was open to the public, reinforcing AAASA’s mission to promote civic awareness and encourage community involvement across all cultural backgrounds. As San Antonio continues to grow in diversity, the Alliance’s efforts reflect a broader movement toward inclusive representation and active citizenship.
